The church of Santa Maria de la Almudena was the oldest church in Madrid until hisoverthrow in 1868 in the context of works of redevelopment of Main Street and theviaduct of Bailen and perhaps influenced by the revolutionary atmosphere prevailed.This church was situated on the corner of the ancient courses of the main streets, wherehe had input and Bailen, being surrounded by the old alley, street Almudena now on thesite of the old mosque of the Muslim Mayrit. The block also housed described thePiazza Santa Maria in the western end. The original mosque would be part of the first walled in the whole of the citadel, next to the castle that once stood on the north side of the site of the Royal Palace.
